My Path in Finding The Best Place to Donate to I Don’t Trust Big Organizations When I was a child I have always wanted to help others. Watching the Christian Children’s Fund commercials where they ask you to just donate a few dollars a day and how it can make a huge difference in a child, but as a kid I had no means of being able to give a few dollars a day. As I got older I began to look at large organizations in a sort of skewed light. My Mother donated to the World Wildlife Fund in my name each year and I received a packet with return address labels, a letter thanking me for the donation, some postcards and other goodies. Vashon Youth and Family Services is a non-profit organization that has been providing human services to residents of Vashon Island in Washington for thirty-one years. Their mission is to help residents living on the island raise thriving, resilient children and youth by fostering a community of emotionally healthy, resourceful family and individuals. The non-profit offers a variety of social services for children and families that centers on the well-being of a family’s child. The organization was first developed as a one-room service center that provided limited counseling and job placement services for families. Today, Vashon Youth and Family Services is the primary social service agency on the island in Washington. Also, it is the only licensed mental agency on Vashon Island. While there are many factors that play a critical role in determining the quality of life an individual will have, education is probably the most important. Although broadly defined, education can be understood as a type of learning in which the skills, habits, and knowledge needed to thrive in a given society are transferred from one generation to the next. Because attaining a quality education plays such a primary role in preparing children to become productive and positive members of society, it is critically important that primacy be placed upon ensuring that they are educated.
